A 10-year Institutional Retrospective Analysis of Retroperitoneal Abscess

Background: Retroperitoneal Abscess (RA) is a rare and often insidious disease, i.e., difficult to diagnose. RA could originate from different retroperitoneal or intra-abdominal organs. The disease manifests various clinical symptoms usually treated with combination of antibiotics therapeutic interventions. Methods: Data total 25 patients who were admitted Loghman Hospital in Tehran City, Iran diagnosis 2010 2020 reviewed this research. Clinical findings, diagnostic tools, treatment approaches, microbiology data considered analyzed. Results: Out the patients, most frequent sources primary infections (36%), followed by gastrointestinal origin (20%). Fifty-two percent presented no underlying disease; however, diabetes mellitus was prevalent remaining ones. Fever, chills, back flank pain (56%) common studied patients. Besides, high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (mean: 93.58%) found researched Computed Tomography (CT) scan Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) reliably diagnose an accuracy 100% 92.3%, respectively. Seventy-two study eventually underwent surgery. By taking advantage CT scan, 24% abscesses drained only 4% required medications achieve remission. Mycobacteria Klebsiella pneumonia pathogens among explored mortality equal 12%; it occurred cases (8%) genitourinary (4%) origin. Conclusion: There exist 3 major choices for treating abscesses, including surgery, image-guided percutaneous drainage, medical therapy. Image-Guided drainage recommended infections; extra-peritoneal surgery useful treat secondary infections, especially those source.
